At the time of the visit the settlements had 572 inhabitants of whom 497 people are affected by leprosy. The majority of the people affected by leprosy are of advanced age. Lerang used to have an in-patient department, but not anymore.
In general, the people in the settlement are self-reliant. The local government provides a monthly donation of Rp 8.000 per leprosy affected person with a deformity. This subsidy is only allocated to 200 inhabitants. The land and houses still belong to the government. The conditions of the complex and the houses are similar to those in the surrounding of the settlement. There is no displayed signboard that points out that there is a leprosy settlement.
