General information

The settlement is subordinated to the government of Soppeng district. It was erected in 1985 on 13 hectares of land, situated about 37 km from Soppeng, the district’s capital, and about 200 km from Makassar. The first inhabitants were leprosy patients transferred by the government from Makassar in 1986. At the time of the visit a total of 147 people live in the settlement, 76 of them are affected by leprosy.

The settlement has got a clear border and there are no clear integrated activities with the surrounding communities. Though, there is no signboard that indicates the name of the leprosy settlement. The village office and a public school are located about 1.5 km from the settlement.

The local government irregularly donates packages of rice, noodles, sugar, soap and cooking oil. In general, the people affected by leprosy in the settlement are self-reliant. Their land and houses still belong to the government.

Medical services
There is no special clinic for leprosy in the settlement, but the government provides a health post (Posyandu), supervised by the near health centre.
