Brief history and situation of the hospital

The establishment of the Makassar Leprosy Hospital was first proposed by the Minister of Health in 1980. The Minister of Health instructed the Directorate Generals for Medical Service and Communicable Disease Control for the realization of the plan.



The Minister of Health and the Director General for Communicable Disease Control then left for Japan to acquire financial assistance from the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation. The plan was only realized in 1987 with Sasakawa donating $1.000.000 from the required total amount of $2.000.000 with a plan to furnish the hospital with a 100 beds capacity.

With recommendation from WHO for the establishment of the Makassar Leprosy Hospital, the Minister of Health issued a decree letter no 568/Menkes/SK/XII/1982 dated 24 December 1982 which was used as a reference of the establishment of the Ujung Pandang Leprosy Hospital as an organic unit within the vicinity of the Department of Health with direct responsibility to the Directorate General for Medical Service.

In 1984 the hospital started functioning under the name of Ujung Panjang Leprosy Hospital. At the same time JongayaLeprosy Hospital was closed and all the patients were moved to Ujung Pandang Leprosy Hospital. What was left in Jongaya was only the leper community village.

In 2001 the name of Ujung Pandang Leprosy Hospital changed to Makassar Leprosy Hospital in line with the changing of the name of the Municipality of the Ujung Pandang became Makassar.

Since it founded, the hospital headed by the following directors:

1. Dr .A.A.Munru: May 1984 – June 1987
2. Dr. F. A. Tanjung: July 1987 – April 1992
3. Dr. D. Tambunan: May 1992 – April 1994
4. Dr .H.M.Sanusi Karateng: April 1994 – January 2001
5. Dr. H. Rasyidin Abdullah: 19  Jan 2001 -  .....

Based on the decree letter from the Minister of Health, number:  270/Men.Kes/SK/VI/1985 regarding the area covered for the development of Leprosy Hospital, the Ujung Pandang Leprosy Hospital established as Regional Referral Hospital for the Eastern part of Indonesia viz. whole provinces of Sulawesi Island, Maluku, and Papua.
