General information
The settlement is subordinated to the Surabaya Municipality. It was erected in 1989 on 3 hectares of land with the aim to settle down leprosy /ex-leprosy patients from the Ngesong temporarily settlement. The place is specialized for disable ex-leprosy patients. At present, 93 ex-leprosy patients of total 135 inhabitants within 54 couples are living here. The proportion of ex-leprosy patients is 69%. The government provides food were cooked centralized in the kitchen.
Before 1998 almost 75% of them are beggars. Today about 5 of them still beggars in markets (not in the streets). Their occupations are tricycle driving (27), building constructions, petty traders, garbage collector, tailors and poultry farmer. Some donation derive from some NGOs such as
1. Rotary: water supply, mosque maintenance, capital for work, health care (Rp 2,500,000. per month).
2. Algons church: provided tricycle-taxi, scholarship, tool kit, food on every Sunday.
3. YKI (Indonesia Leprosy Foundation): capital and tool kit, salary for the teacher of tailoring.
4. Santa Maria school: Tailor machines
Our observation, it was found that the settlement is isolated by fence from normal surrounding people. There is signboard that indicates the existence of a leprosy settlement.
