Brief history and situation of the hospital

It was erected in 1918, caters for leprosy patients at the leprosy settlement of Marianan village. At the beginning the hospital belong to Balai Keselamatan Foundation (1918 – 1960). In April 1960 the hospital handed over to the government. With the decree letter of SK Menkes RI no 95048/Hukum, tanggal 9 Desember 1960, the hospital then established as Sungai Kundur Leprosy Hospital is under the central government. Any patient with social problem, will be sent to the Settlement surrounding the hospital which was erected earlier before the hospital.

At present the hospital has 450 beds and it is a referral leprosy hospital for the western region of Indonesia. Dr Nuraini Kurdi, the director of the hospital is aware that the hospital is under-utilized. Number of leprosy patients admitted to the hospital was decreased from BOR 42% (98) to 39% (99 and 2000).  Diversification is one of the solusion to maximise the function of the hospital. Therefore started at the OPD (1995) and at IPD (2000), the hospital caters for non-leprosy patients.  At present there are 16 beds provides for non-leprosy patients separated from the leprosy patients wards with BOR about 50%. At the OPD, 5 non-leprosy patients are seen (average) per day. The hospital has one surgeon and one dermatologist, 12 general doctors, 4 physiotherapists, 4 staffs for shoe makers. Regional Referral Hospital for the Eastern part of Indonesia viz. whole provinces of Sulawesi island, Maluku, and Papua.

The hospital is functioning as a Regional Referral Hospital for the Western part of Indonesia viz. whole provinces of Sumatera Island and West Kalimantan province.
