21. Leprosy Control- Partnership Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation www.dryaminleprosy.blogspot.com

Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation (SMHF)
SMHF commenced the assistance to the NLCP in 1974. The assistance are  MDT Drugs, Vehicles, Fellowships, Workshops, Supervision Cost (transport and perdiem), Trainings and printing materials. The assistance based on special Agreement for certain donation in certain period of time.

A memorable trip with Dr Yo Yuasa, Executive and Medical Officer of the SMHF.

It was in  April 1992, Dr Yuasa with me made a field visit to Irian Jaya Province (Papua). We flew from Jakarta to Jaya Pura.  After courtesy call to the chief of Provincial Health Office, we continued our trip to Merauke. From the sky we can see how beautiful and green Irian Jaya, our plane flew very close to the Jaya Wijaya mountain so we can see it’s top is covered with snow. For me it was the first time travelling to Irian Jaya.
We visited some Health Centers in Merauke, then we continued our travel to some villages (I forgot the  name of the villages), just nearby the border Indonesia - Papua New Guinea. Along the trip our car was escorted by a jeep with army in it. For the security reason we are not allowed to take picture.

On the way back to Jakarta, we visited Biak at the Biak island of Biak Numfor district. MDT program in this district was covered by The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI). We visited the Biak Health Center, so far, we found that the MDT program is running well.

Here, TLMI staffs gave us surprise. They prepared our dinner with traditional cooking. Some people here at that time still using a traditional cooking viz an 'earth oven' or cooking pit.

To bake food, the fire is built on the top, then allowed to burn down. They use special stones (batu apung?) to have a good fire. The marinated foods are placed in the 'earth oven' layer by layer, cover with banana leaves or special local leaves. Many kind foods can be baked, such as fish, meet, vegetables. Here, instead of rice they choose sweet potato (ubi jalar).

The following are photos with TLMI staffs and related to the 'earth oven' as said above.
