Kanar leprosy settlement

Brief history and present situation (2003)
Kanar leprosy settlement was erected in 1949 on 2.6 hectares of land. The settlement belongs to Sumbawa Besar district under supervision of District Health Office. Formerly the aim of the settlement was to treat and isolate the leprosy patients. Ten years back many of the leprosy patients had died because of old ages. At present there are 7 ex-leprosy patients living in the settlement, 100% integrated with normal village surrounding. All of them are in old ages. Four are widows and one is widower. In reality there is no more settlement, the inhabitants has integrated to the community. There is no border between the settlement and surrounding communities. There is no signboard of the settlement. The normal people and ex-leprosy patients have mixed together. All of them are in self-reliance condition. At present the donation from government is very limited. The government only give them as a present once in a year during the Idul Fitri Eve which is consisted of 50 kg rice, I bottle cocking oil, one can of biscuit, I kg sugar, and I kg dried salty fish. There is no health facility here. Ex-leprosy patients use the Sub-HC (Pustu) for health consultation similarly to normal people. One midwife run a daily clinic of the Pustu. The nearest HC is about 6 km from the settlement i.e Labuhan Sumbawa HC.
