Sumberglagah Leprosy Hospital, 2003

 General information:

The hospital was erected in 1952 caters for leprosy patients. It is situated about 30 km from Mojokerto, the capital of the District, 60 km from Surabaya city. The land area of the hospital is 19.000 M squares. The bed capacity of the hospital was developed from 24 beds (1955) to 50 (1970). Since this time the hospital encountered problems with patients after care where they did not want to go back home because rejected by the family and community. Therefore the government established leprosy village surrounding the hospital in 1985.

Dr Nanang Koesnartedjo is the director of the hospital since 1993. In 1996 the hospital was appointed as a pilot project to cater for leprosy and non-leprosy patients. It started to provide 8 beds for non-leprosy patients in 1996 and develop to 18 in 1998. BOR was reported to be 88% in 2000. The result of pilot project was good, therefore the hospital was established as a leprosy hospital with general disease in 1999.

Present situation:

At present there are available 50 beds for leprosy patients and 40 beds for non-leprosy patients. The hospital is subordinated and belongs to the provincial health service of east java province. The hospital administratively is not responsible anymore to the leprosy village as it had been handed over to the Social Department of East Java Province. The hospital has 3 general doctors, one part timer general surgeon, one part timer orthopedic surgeon, nil for dermatologist and eye specialist, one physiotherapist and 2 trained technicians for footwear and prosthesis. According to the director, the prospect of the hospital in combining leprosy and non-leprosy patients is good.
