12.6 South Sulawesi province: Totinco-Amassangeng leprosy colony - www.dryaminleprosy.blogspot.com

Totinco-Amassangeng leprosy colony (2003)

 General information

The Amassangeng Leprosarium was erected during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia.

In 1984, about 225 people affected by leprosy were living in the settlement. At that time the government of the Wajo district decided to use the location to build a new general district hospital. As compensation, a leprosy settlement at Totinco in the sub-district of Tana Sitolo was constructed. All inhabitants of Amassangeng were transferred to the new Totinco settlement. Since 1985, Amassangeng Leprosarium does not exist anymore, a new general hospital named Lamadukelleng DistrictHospital is now found there.

The Totinco Settlement is subordinated to the government of the Wajo district / Social Department. It was erected on 4 hectares of land, situated about 3 km from Sengkang, the capital of Wajo, and about 245 km from Makassar.

At the time of the visit 237 people are living in the settlement, 96 persons affected by leprosy. All of them are released from treatment.

In general, the people affected by leprosy living in the settlement are self-reliant. The government still owns the land and the houses. It does not provide subsidies any more, but sometimes donates rice or noodles on a special day. The conditions of the complex and the houses are similar to the those in the surrounding communities. There is no signboard that indicates the presence of the leprosy settlement.

Medical services

The settlement does not have a special clinic for leprosy, but a health post (Posyandu). The inhabitants can also use the health centre, which is located only about 700 m from the settlement
