Sungai Kundur Leprosy Colony


The leprosy colony was erected earlier than leprosy hospital. In 1914 there was a ship crew having leprosy disease. The captain of the ship isolated him at Kembang Pumpung village of Kertapati, Seberang Ulu-I. The people surrounding did not like to accept him and they strongly protested. Then the people established a leprosy colony for leprosy patients at Mariana village of Banyuasin and named Sungai Kundur. The leprosy patients at Kembang Pumpung then were transferred to Sungai Kundur leprosy colony Later in 1918 a leprosy hospital was erected here and named Sungai Kundur Leprosy Hospital. 

The leprosy colony has an area of 120 hectares at the beginning during the Dutch occupation. After some years the land areas have reduced with unclear administration. At present the land of the leprosy village is 27,5 hectares (Certificate No 2, Desa Mariana 1993).

The village is situated surrounding the hospital, 30 km away from Palembang and 200 km from Sekayu (Musi Banyuasin District capital).

At present 98 ex-leprosy patients are living in the village. There are 1912 healthy people living in the compound. Therefore total inhabitants are 2010. The proportion of ex-leprosy patient is 0,5 %. The central government provides donation in the form of ration. One package of the ration consist of rice 10 kg, sugar 2 kg , cooking oil 2 liters, eggs 1 kg, milk 450 gram,  bean 1 kg, salt 500 gram and soap 1 peace. The rations are distributed one pack per people per month to whom meet the criteria
