Merauke leprosarium

Brief history of the Merauke Leprosy colony / leprosy hospital
The leprosy hospital have been closed years ago. Interviews have been done to Mr Ozok (Wasor Kusta) and Jonathan Infandi (ex- staff of the Merauke Leprosarium). The following are the summary of the interviews:
 It was reported that many leprosy cases found in Merauke district. Before the local authority erected the leprosy hospital, the leprosy patients were collected in a Temporary Leprosaria viz at Lampu Satu, Okaba and Jawimu. Merauke Leprosarium was erected in 1961. All patients from the temporary leprosaria were transferred to the Merauke Leprosarium. The Merauke leprosy hospital has 250 beds. The patients with no medical indication staying in the hospital but having social problems they must be transferred to leprosy settlements. The Merauke leprosy hospital has 5 leprosy settlements where every settlement has 5 houses for ex-leprosy patients.

In 1997 the Merauke Leprosy hospital had been closed. The function of the hospital was changed to HC. The name of Merauke Hospital was changed to Rimba Raya HC.
