19.2 Maluku province: P. Molana leprosy colony - www.dryaminleprosy.blogspot.com

Brief history of the P. Molana Leprosy colony

According to Dr Andy Louhenapessy (Kusta di Indonesia Depkes RI 1980) the leprosarium was erected in 1856 under the instruction of Mayor Dr Heyman in Ambon (Geneeskungdige Tydschrift voor Wed-Indie XLII 1902).

During the visit, there was no more leprosarium in the Molana island found. According to the people as quoted as saying by Mr. Roby Paunna (Wasor Saparua), the leprosy patients had been transferred out to Saparua island at Hatu Halani Cape along the beach. There was no report, when the Molana Leproasium being closed and when the patients transferred to Hatu Haleni. The original idea that the leprosarium erected at Molana island was that to isolate leprosy patients totally in a small island. Since the founding of treatment for leprosy then the patients transferred to Saparua island but still far way from the town.
In our observation at Molana and Hatu Haleni we could not find any houses any more. In Molana the people are building Bungalow at the place of the ex-leprosarium, the beach is so beautiful.
