19.1 Maluku province: Wainatu leprosy colony - www.dryaminleprosy.blogspot.com

Brief history of the Leprosarium.
It was reported that (Penyakit Kusta di Indonesia Depkes RI 1980) the Leprosarium was in function from 1833 until the Japanese occupation Indonesia (1942). After the Independence of Indonesia, the leprosarium was closed but the leprosy clinic still in function and was named Benteng Leprosy Clinic.

During the visit, it was notfound neither leprosarium nor Leprosy Clinic. A Health Center was built at the place i.e Puskesmas Benteng. Mr David Silanno (65) a former staff of the Benteng Leprosy Clinic told us that the clinic was in function from 1964 until 1983. There were around 100 leprosy patients registered for treatment in the clinic. Mr David was the Leprosy Worker who responsible for the leprosy treatment in the clinic. According to him the patients come from surrounding the clinic (former was a leprosarium) for ambulatory treatment. In 1983 the Leprosy Clinic was closed and a HC was built at it’s place. The leprosy patients were handled integrated in the HC. Year by year the number of patient come to the clinic was decreased. Mr David has retired in 1995 but the HC still occupied him until now. At present there are 8 leprosy patients (MB=7, PB=1) registered for treatment in the HC. The leprosy patients come from different places but not from the ex-leprosarium place.
