Lawela Leprosy Settlement

Address: Desa Basoa, Lingkungan Labusa, Kec. Batauga Kab. Buton

Short history and present situation (2003).

The first settlement was in Batulo. Many patients came in to the settlement especially from Buton, Muna, and Bugis districts. After one year the settlement was crowded with leprosy patients. Therefore the local government had to find out another location in solving the problem. In 1976, Mr Arifin Sugianto, chief, Buton district, provided land about 4 km2 at Bosoa, Batauga Subdistrict. The government erected the settlement and named Lawela Settlement. It is located 19 km away from Buton the capital of district and about 230 miles from Kendari the capital of province. The government provided meals from

1976 – 1984. From 1985 to 1990 the changed the meals with row material such as rice, cooking oil, soap, and all sort of side-dishes. From 1991 there were no more donations from the government and the leprosy/ex-leprosy patients had been self-reliant.

At present there are 80 couples with total of 131ex-leprosy patients are living here. Number of healthy people are 287, therefore total inhabitants are 418. The proportion of ex-leprosy patient is 31%
