The first settlement was in Batulo. Many patients came in to the settlement especially from Buton, Muna, and Bugis districts. After one year the settlement was crowded with leprosy patients. Therefore the local government had to find out another location in solving the problem. In 1976, Mr Arifin Sugianto, chief, Buton district, provided land about 4 km2 at Bosoa, Batauga Subdistrict. The government erected the settlement and named Lawela Settlement. It is located 19 km away from Buton the capital of district and about 230 miles from Kendari the capital of province.
